Just recently while browsing the web I came across an issue of a publication I had edited and written for, a fanzine called Robots, Rebels, & Renegades, for sale on eBay from BB’s General Store.

“Just what is a fanzine?” you might ask. Essentially it is an amateur magazine produced by aficionados of a particular interest group for members of that group at large:

Robots, Rebels, & Renegades was published by the Doctor Who fan club The United States Branch of U.N.I.T. in order to give its members a chance to creatively shine and entertain the science-fiction community. When I came across this on eBay I initially thought there was a typo in the item’s publication date (1952), then I remembered that it was at least partially if not wholly my joke at the time since it was really printed around 1990, as a tie-in gag to the cover art for the James Hussiere Doctor Who story “Dream Along With Me”, depicting a 1950s style robot carrying an unconscious heroine (al la the Tobor the Great movie poster) stepping on a hapless Tom Baker Fourth Doctor, illustrated by Scott Springer. The bit about me also being an editor of The New Yorker was also a joke, we never took things too seriously in our club, and it is amusing that the eBay store is taking it literally. Scott also did the back cover as an inverted joke showing a giant Lieutenant Ellis (played by Gabrielle Drake) from UFO holding the Lost In Space B-9 Robot while being shot at by Interceptors, a la King Kong, of course.

In issue #7 we had a lot of content, including material from DOCTOR WHO, BLAKE’S 7, STAR TREK, STAR WARS, THE PRISONER, SAPPHIRE & STEEL, and MAX HEADROOM as well as original stories, which is something I always took pride in.

And something I had discovered quite awhile ago is that RR&R #4 and #5 are a part of the Mariellen (Ming) Wathne Fanzine Archives Collection at the University of Iowa Library’s Special Collections:
