I want my MTV…

Remember the 1980s? I do, I’m old. 🙂

If you don’t, this’ll give ya some educatin’:

Of course, both MTV and VH1 don’t show music videos anymore, which seems kind of strange until you realize that of course the whole thing is driven by economics. Reality shows make more money so took over eventually. I’m so old I actually remember when MTV showed decent (British) stuff like The Young Ones and The Comic Strip Presents.

Bands still have music videos made, and at first I wondered where does it actually get seen. But of course the answer is internet streaming. YouTube is the new MTV.

“Freebird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd:

I love how at this Oakland concert they not only had a graphic representation of Mount Rushmore but a Confederate flag. Of course these guys weren’t racist, the flag was a symbol of southern pride. Of course all these nitwit “woke” idiots nowadays can’t understand that.

Now for some Roger Waters Kafkaesque alienation, subjugation, political oppression, downright societal rejection, and of course, mind control:

And, something’s in the air tonight:

Now an urban myth has it that this was based on Phil Collins witnessing a drowning, which never took place. Collins himself said that the song was in part a reaction to his (at the time) recent divorce: “I don’t know what this song is about. When I was writing this I was going through a divorce. And the only thing I can say about it is that it’s obviously in anger. It’s the angry side, or the bitter side of a separation. So what makes it even more comical is when I hear these stories which started many years ago, particularly in America, of someone come up to me and say, “Did you really see someone drowning?” I said, “No, wrong.” And then every time I go back to America the story gets “Chinese Whispers”, it gets more and more elaborate. It’s so frustrating, ’cause this is one song out of all the songs probably that I’ve ever written that I really don’t know what it’s about, you know?”

“Money For Nothing,” as Mark Knopfler from Dire Straights said: “The lead character in “Money for Nothing” is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/custom kitchen/refrigerator/microwave appliance store. He’s singing the song. I wrote the song when I was actually in the store. I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real….”

Now for some wholesome Michael Iceberg fun and games as we travel to Tomorrowland at Disneyland for one of his live concerts. Amazingly, he based the pyramidal shape of the “Iceberg Machine” on the cover for Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon album (see, there is a tie-in folks):

Ya gotta love the “Little Piggy Hoedown.”

Next, we travel to the warm Mediterranean waters for Energy 52’s “Cafe Del Mar.”

I love me some sexy Eurotrash. Also, this was the high energy killer track that helped me to achieve 6-ball juggling. The problem was at the time I was so obsessed with a 7-ball cascade that I skipped over the finer nuances of the number 6.

And don’t forget, Rasputin was Russia’s greatest love machine:

Boy could Bobby Farrell dance!

And finally some real boogie-woogie with Dr. K (Brendan Kavanagh) and Ladyva:
