Playing Around the AI Tree with Automattic

Since I’ve made the amazing discovery that WordPress has integrated many AI tools from the Automattic company, including what is called generative AI (think DALL-E, Stability AI. etc.) into its suite of website and blog arsenal I’ve been having the proverbial field day and have been puttin’ these pups through their paces (Best in Show, woof!).

INPUT: A homeless man and his pet giraffe sitting next to a glowing Christmas tree in the middle of the forest.

This concept grew out of a local Christmas tree raffle in which they were raffling off fully decorated artificial trees and I at first wasn’t interested in the raffle itself because I don’t have the room for a tree but then I realized it would make a brilliant sight gag/photo-op to set one up in the woods near a road, and treat it like a Pythonesque “outdoor living room” in which I could wave cheerfully as cars, bikes, and walkers went by the site. But I was too late in entering. ๐Ÿ˜„ But I like the image very much and the man seems friendly.

INPUT: The Tooth Fairy surfing on a chocolate sea surrounded by glowing bees.

This is also very good. I was initially confused because it seems to show a male Tooth Fairy, but then I realized I was biased because I guess I had always assumed that the Tooth Fairy was female but there’s nothing in the folklore that really affixed a gender to the supernatural manifestation. Looking it up on the web, I discovered that in a 1984 study, 74% of the people being surveyed thought that the Tooth Fairy was female, 12% believed the Tooth Fairy to be neither male nor female, and 8% believed the Fairy to be either male or female. And it’s true that in the European mythologies in which fairies appear they could be of either gender.

INPUT: Exterior of a Venetian palazzo with wooden chairs floating in the canal.

Another excellent rendition by the AI. (This image actually ties in with another post in this blog, “A Tale of Two Gardner Museums.”)

INPUT: A Shangri-la paradise with golden palms presided over by a monkey god on a golden throne.

This one came out even better than I expected. I love it. ๐Ÿ˜

INPUT: Silver robot warriors battling against insectoid aliens in an M.C. Escher inspired building.

The AI got confused by the initial description and the creatures it created are a combination of a silver robot warrior and an insectoid alien! And although I love the buildings in the background, they are not (at least totally) inspired by the fantastic artist M.C. Escher, and the creatures are outside not inside. ๐Ÿคจ

INPUT: Elon Musk SCUBA diving in a giant lava lamp in the style of Manet.

This is incredible! It isn’t in the style of impressionist painter Manet, but it is an amazing image though!

INPUT: A WWII B-29 bomber flying over Munchkinland.

This was one of those interesting experiments in AI “understanding” human language. Even though these systems can pass The Turing Test, they still can get mighty confused at times. And I suppose each system is limited by deep learning time it has been exposed to. Although the Munchkinland depicted would make L. Frank Baum himself proud, the plane, although WWII inspired, is way off. It looks like either a fighter or a dive bomber, not a super heavy bomber like the B-29:

B-29 Superfortress.

And it also has generated a third “wing”! Very interesting though.

INPUT: Henry Kissinger negotiating a peace deal between a mongoose and a cobra on the island of Malta during a thunderstorm.

Holy crap!! ๐Ÿ˜€ This is so spot on it is uncanny! Kissinger, the mongoose, the cobra, and the island of Malta are so close it is actually chilling. The robots are taking over!

INPUT: A colossal sea creature about to swallow a crystal cruise ship on the ocean world Metebelis III.

Again, the AI faithfully rendered Metebelis III, the famed blue planet in the Acteon Galaxy perfectly but it merged the sea creature and the cruise ship into one hybrid entity.

INPUT: Wolf howling at an alien moon on the lunar surface.

Bingo! ๐Ÿ˜€ I’ve got a new image for this very blog.

INPUT: A giant mutant child playing in a garden made of body parts in the backyard.

Well, it is disturbing…maybe not as much as I was hoping for. ๐Ÿฅบ But with definite phallic and yonic symbolism lurking in the Freudian undercurrent. Well, on this eerie note, over and out.
